Social impact of IT on individuals

Today I will be writing about the double edged sword that is technology and its social impact on individuals. Technology has many benefits in today’s society, especially mobile phones. “There is an app for that” has become an increasingly true fact as more and more apps come out, just today I have found out that there is an app that can check your sugar level for people with diabetes, I have absolutely no idea how it works but it sounds pretty amazing. But due to smart phones and all these amazing things that they can do, people have become reliant on them. Using them consistently in their everyday life and even becoming unsociable in the company of others without even realizing it, these great devices distract us and stop us focusing on the people in front of us. I find that the video I have attached to this blog portrays perfect examples of my opinion on the social impact on individuals. And as I do not own a smart phone myself, I can relate to the lady in the video. Next time you are out with your mates, make a game out of it, see who can go the longest without checking their phone and whoever goes on their phone first can buy a round of drinks for everyone. Feel free to leave a comment about how you feel about this topic.

  1. I agree with you about how "daft" it is going out socially and spending most of the time checking your phone. Actually its quite rude, and makes you wonder why they bothered meeting up! I wonder if people will lose the ability to just chat and discuss random stuff...

  2. I think its just the age we live in, this unstoppable train that is social media has rocketed in the past few years. People have began to crave the opinions of total strangers, i will admit i would be lost without my phone sometime literally "Google maps i salute you!". But i do agree people spend more time on their phone socializing than actually socializing, I saw this show about what men were like during their partners pregnancy and there was this one man that was only concerned about what his mates were up to than the feelings of his pregnant girlfriend. At one point he had his phone locked away so he could pamper her and he couldn't last the night. Honestly it made me sick that he had more attention to his Facebook than his nearly due girlfriend i literally just shouted Dick!!!!! at the tele

  3. I agree people can become more anti-social when using their smart phone and it can be irritating when someone is on their phone when you are trying to talk to them then a few seconds later they look up from their phones and ask what you just said.

  4. @Isobel Macintosh, it does seem pointless meeting up just to sit on our phones midlessly, i worry for our future generations.

  5. @RoryH, we all have become reliant on the internet in certain ways, some worse than others. Thats sick that that bloke was more concerned about his facebook than his pregnant GF, its time to ditch social media and bring out the old board games and banter.

  6. @Cubsy Hastie, it's quite rude to be honest, but that is just the affect these things have on us as individuals unfortunately.
